Medical Assisting in Delaware

There is no state requirement for medical assistants in Delaware to be certified or registered, but having this credential can make it easier to find a job. For this reason, it is advisable to complete your training on an accredited program that will qualify you to sit for the AAMA or AMT nationally recognized certification exams.

The Delaware Division of Professional Regulation does not have specific definitions of the duties that medical assistants are allowed to perform. The delegation of responsibilities is down to licensed medical professionals, who are expected to use their discretion when allocating tasks, taking into account a medical assistant’s scope of experience.


Delaware is a small state with a few medical assisting programs available. Due to the aging baby boomer generation, there is increased pressure on the services offered by doctors’ offices and other patient care facilities. The increasing demand for healthcare services means that demand for all types of medical assistants in Delaware is set to grow, resulting in plenty of new job openings over the coming years.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are 1,840 medical assistant jobs in Delaware and the need for medical assistants is forecast to rise over the next few years. Currently, medical assistants in Delaware earn an average yearly salary of $30,950 or an hourly rate of $14.88.

In Delaware there is currently no state society or local chapters of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). AAMA members in Delaware belong to the national level of AAMA.

In Wilmington, the Dawn Career Training Institute offers a medical assistant diploma program taught through day or evening classes, or in a blended or online format. Students will receive training in the various skills needed to perform clerical and clinical medical assisting duties, such as examination room preparation, collecting patient specimens and charting medical histories.
